FRIDAY

Santa Cruz’s Devil Makes 3 show’s Friday is sold out, but they’re worth a listen. Most of the tunes in the linked show are straight-forward Americana— but this tune nails the mournful, Faulkner-esque spirit that still haunts the South.

If you still have a hankering for traditional American music why not check out the Laurelthirst Public House? They’re hosting Michael Hurley & the Croakers and Counterfeit Cash Friday, and have live rootsy music every night of the week. A lot of their shows are in the early evening for the 9-5 crowd.

I’ve never heard of Hurley before, but check him out below. It’s be interesting to hear what the kids in Devil Makes 3 are doing when they reach their seventh decade, as Hurley has. Laurelthirst Public House, 5115 NE Sandy, Croakers @ 6 pm * free, CC @ 9 pm * $5

SATURDAY

Comedian and actor Brian Posehn is at Helium Thurs – Sat. Here’s some of his hi-larious standup routine. Helium Comedy Club, 1510 SE 9th * Fri Sat: 7:30 pm, 10 pm * $22

The Portland Spirit River Cruise has their Saturday Night Speakeasy features strolling musicians, a female jazz dance group, and three bands: Inspirational Beets, Jacob Miller and the Bridge City Crooners, and Portland Rhythm Shakers. I’ve known Jacob for a while, and it’s good to see him doing so well with his music. Dock @ Salmon Street Springs Fountain * boards 10:30 pm, cruise 11 pm – 1 am * $10

SUNDAY seattle

I don’t mean to kill your Superbowl fun, but this Frontline documentary “League of Denial” lays out clearly how hard football is on the human body. Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to play football…

Have fun, and be sure to support your Cascadian neighbors!
