This weekend

MNA meeting was Monday. Read the story and see the video here. The board’s done tons of good work and many of the board members are spearheading an emergency shelter in the neighborhood.

They’re still looking for volunteers and supplies at the emergency shelter. They have a new Facebook page here, and a training for volunteers on Sunday 12/17. Or contact them by email: montavillawarmingshelter@protoonmail.com.

 The Oregonian published a piece Friday 12/15 (here) about efforts to determine how to respect civil liberties without leaving people with mental illness to suffer in the harsh weather.

At Academy Theater (website), there are three, yes, three Christmas movies are playing tonight: “White Christmas” (1954) starring Bing Crosby; “A Christmas Story” (1983) about a boy whose only Christmas wish is a BB gun; and “The Star” (2017) about a group of animals who follow the star to Jesus’ manger.

“With the help of hundreds of volunteers, the Sunshine Division will pack and deliver 3,500 Holiday Food Boxes this December.”

The pack nights were fully filled by volunteers with a wait list. If you want to help deliver the boxes, email Erin@sunshinedivision.org to arrange a RSVP.

“Since 1923, the Portland Police Bureau Sunshine Division has been providing food and clothing relief to Portland families and individuals in need. Whether due to the loss of a job, domestic crime, illness, or victims of fire or disaster, the Sunshine Division has built a 95-year legacy of mobilizing quickly and efficiently to assist distressed Portlanders.”

The Lents Holiday Bazaar brings together 80 vendors to benefit the Kelly Elementary PTA (FB page). The organizers made sure to accept a variety of craftspeople, so there’s not too much of one kind of item.

“In this seasonal hands-on workshop, students will learn about the Mexican winter season traditions, which include a combination of indigenous and occidental traditions such as the posadas (parties), nativity scenes, and Día de Reyes. Participants will make their own ornaments and can use them to decorate for the season.”

At O’Neill Public House there’s a bluegrass slow jam 2 pm – 5 pm, and an Irish traditional session from 9:30pm – 11:30pm.

In between, is Stringed Migration (FB page) a quartet that performs a lush synthesis of Celtic and international roots music with a twist of jazz. They play from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm.
